Indigenous Governance

In February 2018, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his intention to develop, in collaboration with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, a Recognition and Implementation of Rights Framework, which would include new legislation and new policies. Since that announcement, the Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs has held a series of consultations with First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders and communities across the country to discuss the framework.

As the government of Canada calls for a renewed “nation-to-nation” relationship with Indigenous people, this collection examines issues of Indigenous governance, including the future of the Indian Act and other laws and policies impacting Indigenous communities in Canada today.
