In Part 1 of this CBC Radio documentary, reporter Maggie Gillis catches up with a Newfoundland family - Bill Nippard, Holly Hoskins and their three children - who spent their Christmas vacation in the Dominican Republic. Rather than heading to the beach, the family made the trip to help build new homes in Agua Negra, Black Water, a highly impoverished community that shelters many Haitian refugees. Maggie speaks with Bill and Holly about why they decided to expose their family to this level of poverty. Their children offer first-hand reflections on the powerful lessons they learned from the experience.
