Martin and Alma Hjertaas settled in Saskatchewan in 1915. They were involved in the cooperative movement, the socialist CCF party of Tommy Douglas and the founding of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Through the generations, continuing today, the family has prided itself on public service. Orville Hjertaas, son of the pioneer Martin, became a father of medicare. Blain Hjertaas, a member of the third generation, has revived the family farm by growing grass to restore the land to what it was when his grandparents first settled it. Dale, another third generation Hjertaas, is a biologist who, with some help from His Royal Highness Prince Philip, saved the burrowing owl from extinction.
