On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz in southwestern Poland. More than one million people were murdered at the camp, most of them Jews. This year some of the survivors returned to Auschwitz and joined world leaders at a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of its liberation. In this News in Review story we’ll show you that ceremony and hear from some of the survivors who returned to remember the dead. We’ll also look at the tragic history of Auschwitz and why it’s such a powerful symbol of the Holocaust.
