Tea, coffee and colas are the only drinks Health Canada allows to contain caffeine. But drink makers have managed to slip around that requirement by using a natural ingredient called guarana. Many natural energy drinks contain guarana, the richest source of caffeine with two to three times the quantity of caffeine in coffee. Unsuspecting consumers are getting a bigger jolt than they realize, all because Canadian laws don’t require guarana to be regulated. That’s because it’s not an additive, like caffeine, but a naturally occurring food ingredient.
