In the last year of the 20th century, Israel faces a pivotal election and will either opt for a continued stand-off with Palestinians or enact the accommodations agreed to in the Olso peace accord. At the same time, it is also facing key negotiations to get out of Lebanon, to settle the Golan Heights issue with Syria and to reach an understanding over water with the new ruler of Jordan. Land, military withdrawal, water, and secular and religious conflict are the ongoing issues in the Middle East story.
