Canadians have always supported and respected the civil safeguards of freedom of the press and the role and responsibility of the media to act as the public’s agent in providing information. As media – in particular television news cameras – became more omnipresent in our society, Canadian media consumers gained access to more information, faster, and in much greater detail. However, the public’s right to know and citizens’ right to privacy are rights that can collide. Balancing these rights and responsibilities is an issue for both news producers and news consumers.
