News in Review Quebec Votes 2012

On September 4, 2012 the first female premier of Quebec was elected. Pauline Marois, the leader of the separatist Parti québécois (PQ), defeated the incumbent Liberal Party, led by Jean Charest, by the narrow margin of less than one percentage point (or four seats) to form a minority government. The newly created party Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) came in third place. This was the fifth time in four decades that Quebecers had elected a sovereigntist government.
