News in Review The Battle for Kosovo: NATO hits Yugoslavia

Ironically, in the year the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is also involved in a war in the ill-fated Balkans. Attempting to redress ethnic cleansing, the mass migration of refugees – ethnic Albanians – out of Kosovo and what has been called genocide, NATO launched an escalating bombing campaign targeted at crippling the government of Slobodan Milosevic. This unprecedented action on the part of the international organization, of which Canada is an active member, may well result once again in the redrawing of the map in this historically troubled area.
