On December 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake ruptured the sea floor near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake sent a massive tsunami, or sea surge, smashing into coastal villages and resorts from Asia to Africa. Tens of thousands of people were killed, and millions were left homeless.
